HISTORY AND STORIES in modern performance art. By Else Jespersen. What is

......? By Eric Andersen.

Intro

Performance art is a hybrid with its experiments in art. It is a cross-over

of other traditional art categories like visual

art, music, theatre, dance, poetry, film, video ? often with use of the

newest technology (computer, internet,

mobile-net etc.). The experimenting, border-crossing element in performance

art ? e.g. with the direct association to

daily life often means action and involvement of the audience in the

performances (interactive performances).The

impact of performances generally is to bring new experience and to set free

imagination and energy by looking at and participating in the performances.

In performance art the inspiration comes from the widest cultural

references. Performance breaks down the barriers -

between conventional art forms ? between political systems - and between

human beings. Performance is love and life.

The concept of PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL ODENSE is always 'pluralistic', e.g.

many categories of performances are

represented, the 'formalistic' performance where the 'significant' element

to the performer is the 'form' - and the

'expressive' performance where the 'content' is stressed on the feelings and

thoughts of the performer ? and even of

the audience.

In 'body-art-performance' is the weight on the body of the performer

her/himself, and here you may even have the

'dialectic' between 'formalism' and 'expressionism'.

In the new political performance we found links to present political

discussions of today. The 'pluralism' or diversity is

present in races, nationalities, ages, sexes(about 50%)

SECTION 1 of the festival:

The live performance section with about 37 solo or group performances with

60 artists performing face-to-face with theaudience. Some performances

including outside assistants (e.g. students from the Funen Academy of Art

and the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense).

'The historical dimension':

A very important dimension in the 3rd PFO is the participation of several

'elder' Fluxus-artists from the 60s performing

together and in solo-pieces too. The Fluxus-artists are going to involve

many students from the academies of art and music in Odense.

Another important performance artist from the former performance group ZAJ

in Spain, Esther Ferrer, is giving a

historical aspect, too, because of the collaboration with Fluxus in the 60s.

The geographic dimension:

Together with the European artists 3rd PFO has participant artists from both

the West (USA and Cuba), the East

(The Philippines, South Korea, China, Indonisia). So the multi-ethnic and

cultural diversity will be represented

and even different political basis for artists are represented.

SECTION 2 of the festival:

The 'Sound Box' is a room with surround-music system and where the public

may listen to CD-recorded sound-pieces

'composed' by about 15 international artists (primarily coming from the

visual area). 'Sound Box' is curated by Jacob

Fabricius and Tommy Lund, Copenhagen.
