The Baltic Times

Skuc Gallery & P74 Gallery

Ljubljana

August 31 – October 7, 2001

You are kindly invited to attend the opening of the exhibition on Friday, August 31 at 8 p.m. at P74 Gallery and at 9 p.m. at Skuc Gallery.

The exhibition The Baltic Times primarily shown in the Museum of Contemporary Art – Zagreb in May 2001 presents artists and groups active in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia today. The curators Branka Stipancic & Tihomir Milovac were concerned to present recent works and productions reflecting the radically changed positions of artists and the notion of art in these states after the fall of the Berlin wall followed by the independency of the Soviet reign. Being aware of the attempts of the series of mega-exhibitions organized from the early 1990s, trying to redefine the contemporary art of Europe, and the increasing attention towards the Baltic states in the international art world, the curators aim was not to “mount a show based on European cultural geography” but rather to create “a platform of sorts, a meeting point for a group of artists, curators, and critics who share similar professional and private experiences.” The exhibition includes works presented the very first time and works which have already been shown at prominent thematic shows and overview exhibitions of European art previously.

The Baltic Times presents works by:

ATG / Academic Training Group (Vilnius) - Eriks Bozis (Riga) - Kai Kaljo (Tallinn) - Ando Keskkula (Tallinn) - Ly Lestberg (Tallinn) - Gintaras Makarevicius (Vilnius) - Deimantas Narkevicius (Vilnius) - Marko Raat (Tallinn) - Arturas Raila (Vilnius) - Egle Rakauskaite (Vilnius) - Riga Dating Agency (Riga) - Ene-Liis Semper (Tallinn) - Olegs Tillbergs (Riga) - Jaan Toomik (Tallinn)
