Alexander Steig in GUK

Opening on sunday, January the 14th at 4 o¹clock in Iceland and 2 o¹clock in Denmark and Germany.
Alexander Steig is a young German artist now working on his doctors degree from the University of Hildesheim. He usually works with video and television and their interaction with the viewer and also the idea of eftirlits cameras interests him.

In Alexander Steig¹s work ³People looking at people looking at fish²  (1999)  visitors come to a large aquarium and look at the fish. In a different place in the exhibition they realize that visitors can be seen live when they  look at the fish as seen from the viewpoint of the fish.

In his work "Tokyo Sheetahs last employment" done now for GUK, Alexander Steig has dissociated the elements of a television and divided them among the three locals. In the shed in Lejre in Denmark there will be a video running showing a recording of the old tv screen showing only snow. In the kitchen in Hannover only the flickering sound from the old tv can be heard and in the garden in Selfoss will be the tv  itself, alone (in the snow) in its last employment. The tv was made in Japan in the sixties and exported to Germany where it was used for decades. Then it travelled to Selfoss in Iceland where it will finish it¹s career.
