Nomads & Residents

A forum for visitors in the arts: making connections, supporting
networks,
setting up meetings

Monday May 22nd, 7.00 pm at Art in General, 79 Walker Street

Porn Nite

with:
Shu Lea Cheang (Tokyo based filmmaker, hyper media artist and digital
drifter)
Kathy High (New York based media artist, curator and editor of Felix
Magazine)
Marlene McCarty (New York based artist)

Shu Lea Cheang will present an excerpt from her just completed film IKU,
a
self-proclaimed Japanese sci-fi porn feature. IKU (meaning 'to come')
severs
cumbersome tentacles of the wired 90's and initiates the body as a
gigabyte
hard drive, self-driven by a programmed corporate scheme. Prosthesis,
not
implanted but digitally rendered, codes hyper orgasm as database, ready
for
download.

Kathy High will present work from her notorious Icky and Kathy Trilogy.
This
rough and ready trilogy is about twin sisters who "act out" and act up
in
their own best interests. At the age when a young girl might discover
her
own sexuality, they explore themselves (and even each other) in their
"games" and playtime together. In the three sections--Icky & Kathy Find
Liberty, The Baby sitter, and Learning to Suck--the girls (as played by
High
and her twin) engage in slightly illicit acts together, or are led by
their
guardians....

Marlene McCarty will discuss her project Some Girls (also known as
Poltergeist: Girls at Home). For five years she has researched the true
stories of girls who killed their mothers. She has also traveled to and
trespassed the crime sites (always their homes) to gather visual
material.
The project has resulted in 23 monumental and highly sexualized drawings
of
each of the girls. The drawings will be exhibited in "Seeking the Whole"
a
show in St. Petersburg, Russia. McCarty is currently working on a DVD
project using this material.

Big cities are in a continuous flux, with a coming and going of people
who
settle in, stay temporarily or move through. Newcomers enter this flux,
become part of the life of the city, and make connections with others.
The
city, as a space, contains possibilities through the dynamic
relationships
between people, which may provoke an active engagement. Strangers become

friends, ideas become practice, models are being transformed into
action.
NOMADS & RESIDENTS makes connections with people who live here and with
people who visit, by setting up an active network of collaborators, and
creating and organizing public events in a variety of places. NOMADS
&RESIDENTS invites artists, guests, curators, critics, activists,
travelers
and passers-by to present insight into their practice, their ideas,
histories, and drives.

The curatorial and organizing group of NOMADS & RESIDENTS consists of
New
York based and temporary residents. They actively seek out information
about
who is coming to New York and when, they invite guests to present
his/her
ideas and solicit the involvement of spaces where these presentations
can
take place. They welcome advice, ideas and the enthusiastic support of
others. The events will be partly informal and casual, and will focus on

exchanging ideas, initiating new projects and networks. They will also
include short presentations, lectures, talks, sideshows, small
exhibitions,
performances, discussions. Priority will be given to proposals that
could
become projects that will be shared among the participants, to a
practice
that can make resources and ideas available for common use.
