NOMADS & RESIDENTS
A forum for visitors in the arts: making connections, supporting
networks, setting up meetings

"Urban Space as Social Fabric"

Thursday April 27, 7pm, at The Cooper Union, The Hewitt Auditorium, 41
Cooper Square (Third Avenue between 6th+7th streets), 2nd floor.

With: Nils Norman (New York), Valerie Tevere (New York, Los Angeles),
and
Luca Vitone (Milan)

NILS NORMAN has developed imaginary propositions for the radical
redevelopment of various urban spaces in New York, including: Battery
Park
City, Stuyvesant Place, and Tompkins Square Park. His work addresses
how
environmental concerns, tenant's rights, and political histories have
been
marginalized within public architecture and discourse. He is an artist,

teacher and activist who currently lives in New York.

VALERIE TEVERE will be presenting "CONCRETE PROJECTIONS: a night in the
projects," a mixed-media public performance which took place at the
Aliso
Extension Housing Projects in Los Angeles, one of the three projects in
East
Los Angeles slated for demolition and redevelopment. The work combines
projected images with electronic music and live interviews. "CONCRETE
PROJECTIONS" was created in collaboration with La Union de Vecinos and
the
electronic music group Ultra-Red. Tevere has worked collaboratively with

these two groups since 1997. She currently lives and works in New York.

LUCA VITONE is an artist based in Milan whose work involves researching
the
cultural and political histories of urban spaces. Past projects include
the
production of a map of local community cultures (food, meeting places
etc.)
in Milan. Vitone has also created installations and exhibitions
exploring
the history of anarchism in Rome and the cultural practices of the
Gypsies.
In addition to his work as an artist, Vitone is currently an organizer
of
the Italian cultural space "Link". His latest project, entitled "Hole",

opens April 30th 2000 at the PS1 Contemporary Art Center.

*This meeting was made possible by the Visiting Artist Lecture Series
(VALS)
at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

NOMADS & RESIDENTS makes connections with people who live here and with
people who visit, by setting up an active network of collaborators, and
creating and organizing public events in a variety of places. NOMADS
&RESIDENTS invites artists, guests, curators, critics, activists,
travelers
and passers-by to present insight into their practice, their ideas,
histories, and drives. The curatorial and organizing group of NOMADS &
RESIDENTS consists of New York based and temporary residents. They
actively
seek out information about who is coming to New York and when, they
invite
guests to present their ideas and solicit the involvement of spaces
where
these presentations can take place. They welcome advice, ideas and the
support of others. The events will be partly informal and casual, and
will
focus on exchanging ideas, initiating new projects and networks. They
will
also include short presentations, lectures, talks, sideshows, small
exhibitions, performances, discussions. Priority will be given to
proposals
that could become projects that will be shared among the participants,
to a
practice that can make resources and ideas available for common use.

NOMADS & RESIDENTS is organized and compiled by Liesbeth Bik (artist,
The Netherlands), Andrea Geyer (New York based artist), Gordon Knox (New

York based initiator and organizer), Jan Kopp (artist, France), Micah
Lexier (New York based artist), John Menick (New York based artist),
